Directions

From Christianshavn, take Metro to Marmorkirken or walk across Inner Harbour Bridge and continue toward Frederik’s Church.

Amalienborg Palace is an 18th-century Rococo royal complex centered on a grand octagonal square in Copenhagen. Rather than one palace, it consists of four matching mansions facing Amalienborg Slotsplads, with an equestrian statue at the center and Frederik’s Church nearby. The site became the Danish royal family’s residence after Christiansborg Palace was damaged by fire in 1794, and it remains one of Denmark’s most important symbols of monarchy. Today, Amalienborg Palace is valued for its restrained elegance, ceremonial royal guards, and museum displays that help visitors understand royal life, architecture, and the continuing role of the Danish crown within the city’s historic landscape near Christianshavn.

Before you enter

  • Check the day’s opening details before leaving Christianshavn, as museum access may vary.
  • Arrive at least 30 minutes before noon for a good place around the square.
  • Wear layers; the open palace square can feel windy even on mild days.
  • Combine your visit with Frederik’s Church and the waterfront views toward the Opera House.

What to expect

  • Expect a large open square framed by four elegant palace buildings.
  • The changing of the Royal Guard is the main daily spectacle around midday.
  • Museum interiors feel refined rather than extravagant compared with larger European palaces.
  • Views from the square include Frederik’s Church and across the water toward the Opera House.

During your visit

  • Stand behind barriers or police instructions during the guard ceremony.
  • Walk around the full octagonal square to appreciate the symmetry of the complex.
  • Take photos early or after the ceremony, when the square is easier to frame.
  • Allow extra time if parts of the square are under maintenance or temporary works.
