Directions

From Christianshavn, take the M1 or M2 Metro one stop to Kongens Nytorv; the square is outside the station.

The King's New Square, known in Danish as Kongens Nytorv, was laid out under King Christian V in the late 17th century as Copenhagen expanded beyond its older medieval streets. His equestrian statue remains the square’s focal point. Around it stand buildings that reflect the city’s cultural and civic life, including the Royal Danish Theatre, Charlottenborg Palace and Hotel d’Angleterre. The square also marks the entrance to Nyhavn, connecting this formal royal setting with Copenhagen’s historic waterfront. Today it is a major Metro interchange and gathering place, with benches, seasonal flowers and space to pause among the surrounding landmarks. For visitors staying in Christianshavn, it offers an easy introduction to the city centre across the harbour.

Before you enter

  • Check the weather: the square is open-air, with little shelter during rain or strong wind.
  • Save Kongens Nytorv Metro station as your meeting point; several exits lead onto the square.
  • Allow extra time if you plan to continue along nearby Nyhavn.

What to expect

  • Look for Christian V’s equestrian statue at the centre of the square.
  • Expect a lively transit hub, with people crossing between the Metro, surrounding streets and Nyhavn.
  • Benches offer places to rest and take in the surrounding architecture.

During your visit

  • Walk around the square to see the Royal Danish Theatre, Charlottenborg Palace and Hotel d’Angleterre.
  • Step back from the statue for a wider photograph that includes the buildings around it.
  • Keep cycle paths clear when stopping to look around or take photos.
