Best time to visit

Visit early in the morning for quieter photos; late spring through early autumn is pleasant for a waterside walk.

Crowd level

With over 3,000 reviews and frequent Little Mermaid visitors, this is a popular photo stop. No advance entry booking is needed; before 9 a.m. is generally quietest.

Directions

From Christianshavn, cross Knippelsbro and head north via Nyhavn to Churchillparken, beside Kastellet.

Completed in 1908, Gefion Fountain is a bronze depiction of a story from Norse mythology. The goddess Gefion drives four oxen—her sons, transformed for the task—as they plow through the earth. In the legend, the land they pull away becomes the Danish island of Zealand. The sculpture turns that moment of movement and force into a dramatic cascade of figures and water. It stands in Churchillparken, near Kastellet and the waterfront, rather than in Christianshavn itself. For visitors, the fountain offers both an introduction to a story associated with Denmark’s landscape and a striking example of public sculpture from the early twentieth century.

Before you enter

  • Find the fountain in Churchillparken, not in Christianshavn itself.
  • Check the weather: this is an outdoor stop with little shelter at the fountain.
  • Allow extra time if you plan to walk here from Christianshavn.

What to expect

  • Look for Gefion above four powerful oxen in the bronze sculpture.
  • Expect other visitors stopping for photos, especially on the route to the Little Mermaid.
  • Water flow may vary by season; the sculpture remains visible year-round.

During your visit

  • Walk around the fountain to see how the figures work together from different angles.
  • Pause at a safe distance from the basin for a full view of the sculpture.
  • Continue through Churchillparken toward Kastellet or the waterfront after your stop.
