Directions

Take a harbor bus to Operaen, or walk or cycle through Christianshavn to Ekvipagemestervej 10.

Opened in 2005, the Copenhagen Opera House brought a major new performance venue to the Christianshavn side of the harbor. Danish architect Henning Larsen designed the building, which was funded by the A.P. Møller Foundation. Its broad, projecting roof and waterfront position make it a landmark visible from central Copenhagen, while its glass-fronted foyer looks back across the water. Inside, the main auditorium seats around 1,400 people. The house is closely associated with the Royal Danish Opera and the Royal Danish Ballet, making it an important part of the city’s performing-arts life. Its modern design also sets up a striking contrast with Copenhagen’s older buildings across the harbor: even without attending a performance, visitors can appreciate the architecture from the surrounding waterfront.

Before you enter

  • Check the exact venue on your performance confirmation; the Royal Danish Theatre uses more than one building.
  • Check the performance schedule before visiting, as access to the interior depends on what is happening that day.
  • Allow extra time to reach the waterfront location if you are coming from central Copenhagen.

What to expect

  • The enormous overhanging roof is one of the building’s most recognizable features.
  • The waterfront offers views toward central Copenhagen.
  • Expect a modern performance venue rather than a historic opera-house interior.

During your visit

  • Step back along the waterfront to take in the building’s full façade.
  • Pause in the foyer for harbor views if it is open during your visit.
  • Keep noise low around entrances when a performance is about to begin.
