Directions

From Christianshavn, cross Knippelsbro toward Slotsholmen; the Stock Exchange building stands near the bridge.

The Stock Exchange building, known as Børsen, stands on Slotsholmen across the water from Christianshavn. Commissioned by King Christian IV in the early 17th century, it was built to strengthen Copenhagen’s role as a trading centre. Its long waterfront façade and distinctive spire, formed by four intertwined dragon tails, made it one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Although it ceased to function as a stock exchange, the building remained closely associated with Danish commerce. A devastating fire in April 2024 caused extensive damage and brought down the historic spire. Reconstruction is underway, so the building’s appearance and access may change. Even from outside, its setting offers a glimpse of the ambitions behind Christian IV’s Copenhagen.

Before you enter

  • Check current access information before setting out; reconstruction may prevent entry.
  • Allow time to see the building from the waterfront rather than planning an indoor visit.
  • Bring a map of Slotsholmen if approaching from Christianshavn; the building is across the harbour.

What to expect

  • Expect scaffolding or barriers that may obscure parts of the façade.
  • Look for the building’s long, narrow outline beside the water.
  • The dragon-tail spire collapsed in the 2024 fire; its appearance depends on restoration progress.

During your visit

  • Follow posted safety signs and keep clear of fenced work areas.
  • Walk toward Christiansborg for another perspective on the Stock Exchange building.
  • Take photos from public paths without blocking cyclists or pedestrians.
