Valencia’s Silk Exchange, known locally as La Lonja de la Seda, reflects the city’s wealth as a Mediterranean trading centre in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Construction began in 1482, with master builder Pere Compte associated with its celebrated Gothic design. Merchants met here to negotiate deals, making the building a lasting symbol of Valencia’s commercial life and the silk trade that helped shape the city. Inside, the grand trading hall is distinguished by soaring, twisted stone columns and a vaulted ceiling. The complex also includes the Consulate of the Sea, linked to the regulation of maritime commerce, and a courtyard with orange trees. UNESCO added the Silk Exchange to its World Heritage List in 1996.
